films

the awards for the Third Take Short Film Competition were on Saturday night. They were an excellent collection of short films – the list of winners is on the website, and we’re planning to put the actual films up there too [and once copyright’s clarified on a couple, to produce a dvd]. My two favourites were ‘the night the tide came in’, which was a fairly trippy, surreal film, which i just loved… and the mockumentary ‘Sole Searching’ [which i understand was shortlisted at tropfest last year too].

The whole competition was a great success, and there was a lot of interest from the film makers who were there on the night about the future of the competition. we are planning to make the competition an ongoing event, but we’re still discussing how it should be focussed in the future.

i have a parallel idea that i’ve been stewing on for a while [inspired a little by jonny’s posting here]… pairing up film makers [perhaps students in their final year at RMIT or VCA] with some of the ‘fringe’ groups in our community [asylum seekers, refugees, prisoners-on-release etc.], and for the pairs to make a short film together about their experience of australian community. we could take a different theme each year – welcome, hospitality, home, space, freedom…

we’re applying for funding at the moment, it will cost a fair bit to make this one happen…
