But the Lord says,
“Do not cling to the events of the past or dwell on what happened long ago.
Watch for the new thing I am going to do.
It is happening already – you can see it now!
I will make a road through the wilderness and give you streams of water there.
Even the wild animals will honour me;
jackals and ostriches will praise me when I make rivers flow in the desert
to give water to my chosen people.
They are the people I made for myself, and they will sing my praises.”
The Lord says, “You are weary, but not from worshipping me…”
It’s not for us to make this new thing happen, God
That’s for you to do.
And you are.
But to see it, we need to go far –
into the deserts in our church,
the wilderness of our world,
and the barren places that invade our lives.
We need to travel lightly without the baggage of expectations and nostalgia.
And we need to look with eyes unencumbered by cynicism, fear or arrogance.
You are making rivers flow, Creator God:
Make us to be your people,
and make this world your new thing.
