we waited

for those for whom the world is darker, less kind, this week

we waited for the miracle:
surrounded by its death
we stood vigil
for hope

suffocated by the air
that we now know is too heavy
weighted with devastating possibility

and we waited for the miracle

we are not ashamed to say we wailed
we cried for what we couldn’t yet
grief for the grief we knew would come
grief for the fear and pain that waits when this sinks in
tears for what we know already we won’t be able to live with
and we wished we had died
instead of you
we wished we could die
with you

and we waited for the miracle
because resurrection
has to be less impossible
than the task of us surviving this
